Nevus sebaceous of Jadassohn (NSJ) is a benign, congenital hamartoma. Benign and malignant tumours can develop within it.
The main purpose of this study was to review the clinical and histopathological aspects in patients with NSJ and to identify
the arising tumours developed in excised NSJ in Hospital Clínico de la Universidad de Chile. Histopathological reports from the
Anatomical Pathology Department between 1991 and 2004 were studied . Only cases with histopathological diagnosis of NSJ
were retrieved. Age, sex of the patient, the anatomical location, size of lesion, clinical and histopathological diagnosis and the
presence of clinical symptoms in the patients were studied. 72 patients were analysed, the average age was 23 years old. 58%
were males. The most frequent anatomical location was scalp and face (91%). 45% of the lesions were congenital. The average
diameter of lesions was 2.9 cm . The clinical and histopathological diagnostic correlation was 84%. Only a 15% of cases was
associated with a tumour. This association was found in patients older than 18 years old. On these patients Tricoblastoma was
the most common tumour found (11%), Basal Cell Carcinoma was the second (5,6%). The results of this study showed that NSJ
is a lesion present in both sexes, is mainly congenital, preferably located in the face and in the scalp. The association of NSJ
with tricoblastoma observed in this study is in agreement with previous published reports. No tumours were found in youngers
than 18 years old.
